JESUS, THE GREAT PHYSICIAN
By Rev. K. C. Gaila
Jesus, the great physician, He is the greatest physician who ever came to heal the sickness of the world. In fact, even doctors do not really know how healing takes place in our body. Because healing is the work of God, it's a miracle. And we need this miracle in everyday life, supernatural things, unexpected events, divine intervention. To experience the healing power of God, you need faith in Jesus. let us see from the story of a leper who was healed.
In Mark 1:40-45 there is a story about a man who came to Jesus for healing, from leprosy. We are not told as how this man became leper. But I believe that he wasn't born as leper, but perhaps, he got this terrible disease somewhere, unknowingly and possibly without realizing. He might have tried every medicine available, sometimes try to cover it up, or pretend that he wasn't a leper, but he could not hide any longer and there was no cure, till one day he came to Jesus. No money, no wealth or richest can buy healing. In those days leprosy was a symbol of sin, the most loathsome disease, was incurable. Of course, even today a man having leprosy will feel himself terrible. and he/she will do every possible ways and means to get heal from the dreaded disease.
“Behold, there came a leper and worship him. A man with leprosy came to Jesus and begged him on his knees. Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean. When this leper came to Jesus, he did not say, “Will you make me clean”/ or “Are you able to make me clean”? This leper had faith; there was no doubt about it. Therefore, what is the most important thing in life is faith, your faith in God. It is not your intellect, your strength, your ability, your wealth nor influences which are important; but your faith in God is most important thing. This leper had faith in Jesus, which means, first of all he recognized the Lordship of Christ. And on that basis he said,” If you will, you can make me clean.”
1. The Leper Acknowledges the power of God to heal him from leprosy, Based his prayer on God's character. Pray like you know God will answer you. “I'm expecting you to answer this prayer because of who are you”. You are a faithful God. You are a great God. You are a loving God. You are a wonderful God. You alone can handle this problem, O God.
Yes, Jesus is the Great physician. He came to heal mankind of their problems, of which the greatest is sin. Therefore, whatever may be your problems, your disease or your sins, there is nothing Jesus cannot do for you; provided you have faith like this leper and have the courage to come to Him.
He declared in Mat, 9:12 saying “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick”. In other words, the Lord's healing power is available only to those who are willing to humble themselves before God and submit to his treatment.
2. The Leper took courage to come to Jesus for healing. The palmist rightly said in 145:18 “The Lord is near to all who call on him…”He is there for you and for me. After this leper bases his prayer on who God is, he acknowledged his need of healing from the leprosy, and then he took courage to tell Jesus.
Here we see the faith, the courage and the guts of the man with leprosy. In another occasion, Mark 6:5-6 when He came to Nazareth with his disciples; “He could not do any miracles there” because of their unbelief. The Bible recorded that Jesus went everywhere doing great miracles-healing the sick, restoring sight to the blind, raising the dead, feeding the crowd, and so on. But in Nazareth, his home town, he could not do any miracle, why? Because of unbelief. Therefore, the only limitation to the power of God is unbelief. In other word, faith is the one requirement to release the power of God in salvation. Unbelief insulates and isolates the power of God. It still does that today.
We may not have leprosy today, but all of us do have some sickness if not physically, more serious is the spiritual sickness which inflict many souls. You need to come to the great physician for healing. The question is, “will you come to Jesus and say, “Lord, you know my trouble…you know the sickness of my soul, will you please heal me?” Friends, you might be trying hard to cover up, people may not know much about it, even your family members or friends may not know the sickness, the struggles of your life. But God knows them, He wants to heal you right away. He wants to restore you. Jesus' compassion reaches to every willing heart and his healing is given freely. The Lord restores us without any medical bills, when he performs miracles in bringing restoration and renewal, we do not have to worry about paying off our debt. Just come to him now.
3. The leper received the healing; he received what he was longing for, the healing from the deadly disease called leprosy. Mark 1: 41 “Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man”. Oh what a beautiful scene, what a compassionate and loving touch of Jesus- reaching out his hands saying, I am willing, be clean”. Friends, don't you know that Jesus is telling you today, “I am willing to heal you; I am willing to help you.” Verse 42 “Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.” In that moment a great miracle took placed and he became a new person in Christ. Yes, this is a miracle, the work of God. That's wonderful, Praise the Lord. This can happen to you today, to anyone who comes to Jesus for healing.
Notice this, Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him. Yes, He touched him. May I say this to you (today) that the touch of Jesus was one of the most wonderful things that ever had happened to this man? It not only cleansed his leprosy, but it brought him back into the family of mankind and into the family of God. The Bible records that instantly his leprosy was cured. Mark 1:45 he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news about Jesus, he became a powerful witness for Jesus. He lived the rest of his life for the glory of God. What a wonderful testimony.
If you want to experience the healing touch of God, like this man, you must acknowledge who Jesus is; admit that you are sick with a terrible sickness, incurable disease; then claim His healing power.
3. The Leper claim the promise of God, claim the power of God for healing. We are to be specific when you claim the power of God, in what you ask for. If you want specific answers to prayer, then make specific prayer- like this man “clean me, heal me.” Each individual has to exercise personal faith in Christ. No individual can claim church membership, or family tradition, or the fact that his parents are Christian, for his healing or for his own salvation. (for blessings from God).
The Psalmist has specific prayer, a desire, for example, he was longing for one thing, for renewal, Psalms 80:18-19, revive us, and we will call on your name, Restore us, O Lord God Almighty, make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.”
That was the heart's desire of the Psalmist - craving for the loving touch of the Lord. Today, we need a fresh touch of the living God, more than anything else. The Lord God promise 3 things in 2 Chro,7:14 “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chro.7:14). Today, we need the healing touch of God in every aspect of our lives. Shall we not cry like the Psalmist, “Lord will you not revive us today?” Will you not restore us that we may rejoice in you?
No matter what your problem, your sickness may be, you need to claim the power of the healing touch of Jesus, yes, the healing touch of Jesus is what we need everyday. There is nothing He cannot do for us, be it physical sickness, mental disorder or any problem in life, He can bring healing. Let us come to Jesus and claim His power. Young people, you need his blessing in your studies, His healing touch; he can make you fruitful, useful person, you just have to come to the great physician and ask for his healing touch in your life. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He can do a miracle in your life.
Today, we need his touch, the healing from God. Has the Lord Jesus touched your life? There are so many lives that need to be touched. If you are experiencing His power in your personal life, I am confident that you can reach out to someone for the Lord. Yes, we are to reach out our hands and touch some one in need today. Like the leper who was healed by Jesus, let us bring healing in our own family, in our society, in our work places. The world is longing for healing, healing from sickness, healing from poverty, healing from many other problems. Let us first come to Jesus, the great physician, to receive the healing, and be an agent of healing. May the Lord help us to be a source of encouragement and blessing to others? May God bless you,
